Your Computer Crashed – How To Recover Your Data

By Jacob Somer

Computers are such a huge part of our daily lives. Just imagine going computer-less for even 1 day. Hard huh? Could you make it through a week without logging on to check your emails, your Facebook account or watch your favorite Youtube videos. What if your computer completely crashed. Are you prepared?

So much information is stored in each computer, even the smallest ones. So when a computer breaks down, we feel like it’s the end of the world. This is why computer data recovery has gained importance in the past few years.

Computers are a big part of the human society. These are used to complete school and office work. They also facilitate banking and communication. So when something goes wrong, our lives and many others can be affected. Can you imagine how it would feel if your bank’s computers crash and there is no way for them to know how much hard-earned money you have with them? Companies, such as those mentioned above, specialize in getting back all the information that has been lost.

If the computer crashed because of OS failure (when Windows Vista, Linux, or Mac OS X fails) then the information in the hard drive can simply be copied to another medium before the OS is reinstalled.

Physical damages in storage devices always cause some data loss. It may be of different kinds: CDs and DVDs may be scratched while hard disk heads (that part that reads and writes information) or motors might fail. Before any data can be retrieved, these damages should first be fixed. However, these cannot be done by everyone. This is because, if one opens a hard disk at home, he or she can allow dust to settle on the platter (the disc where information is stored). This can cause more damage because when the dust particles get in between the platter and the read/write head, the head could crash and damage the platter.

If data was lost because it was accidentally deleted or the drive was unintentionally formatted, do not fear because this can still be recovered by taking it to a professional. However, do not add new data into the drive before having data recovered, because the computer might write over the “lost” data, preventing anybody from recovering those. If only one file is damaged, do not create another with the same file name because the computer will automatically overwrite part of the original file. Instead save your data under a different file name then take your computer or storage device to a technician.
