Protecting Your Teenager From Online Harm
By David LaneOur children are using the computer and internet technologies to wider and wider areas. This has given us many benefits but at the same time has given us many problematic situations, as well.
Because we cannot sit behind our child and watch his or her computer usage 24 hours per day, it is very easy for a child to fall into danger by talking to someone either posing as another child or purposely trying to talk to children for illegal purposes.
To make sure that your child and teenager remains safe while using the internet, there are a few things that you should consider doing to help.
Firstly, you should talk to your child or teenager about their computer usage and remind them never to give out personal information including your house’s address, for example. Also, remind your child or teenager that strangers online may be posing or pretending to be someone else in order to gain access to them.
In addition, it is important to remember that dangerous situations and inappropriate behavior can occur quite often with other children or teenagers that your child or teenager knows.
Instant messaging is quite removed from face to face meetings due to simple text being transferred back and forth in quick messages. Because of this, inappropriate soliciations are often made quite more frequently than they would have been if there were a meeting in person.
Talking to your child or teenager should always be the first step in safety but sometimes you will need to take stronger measures. In this case, you can use computer software that has been recently created to monitor your child or teenager’s online use and alert you if any inappropriate conversations or activity is being taken online.
