Loads of much-loved children’s films were initially darling kids books. Many children’s books that have been around for a very long time have been made into movies at distinctive times in the past. Most of the films can stand on their own and nearly all of the books were previously classics. How faithfully do the films storylines follow the books?

A somewhat recent movie that was adapted from a series of books is “The Spiderwick Chronicles” from 2008. The film was adapted from the series of books by the same name written by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. There has only been one picture so far but there are actually 5 books in the series at this point. The books and the picture follows the escapade of a family of children who move into a new residence where they find a unique book that leads them into a land filled with goblins and trolls, elves and dwarves and other creatures.

The adored kids book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl was first available in 1964. It has been modified into two popular films, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” in 1971, starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and from 2005 “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.

In 1952, the writer, E.B. White brought us one of the most beloved family tales of all time with “Charlotte’s Web”. The book has remained in print always since its first printing. An animated film of “Charlotte’s Web” was released in 1973. In December 2006, a live action film version was released. Both films followed the original story exactly.

Dr. Seuss is arguably the most adored children’s authors of all time. A lot of of his tales are now being made into films. The most recent was “Horton Hears A Who” in 2008 with Jim Carrey as the voice of Horton. This cartoon feature film was rather similar to the book.

“The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”, one more Seuss classic was made into an animated rendering that showed on Television every holiday season. That adaptation followed the book. But in the year 2000 a big budget film of “The Grinch” came out with Jim Carrey as the Grinch and there were many extra scenes and events. “The Cat In The Hat”, also from Seuss was released in 2003 and it too, had additional scenes and events.

One of the peak grossing film series of all times is from the family books on Harry Potter authored by J.K. Rowling. At this point 6 of the 7 books have been made into films with a plan to make two movies from the 7th installment for a total of 8 movies. This series is the 2nd premier grossing series in times past behind James Bond.

Kids books frequently produce notable films that the entire family unit can enjoy. Viewing the films and reading the books as a family unit can make for a quantity of great family times and wonderful family reminiscences.
