AVG Anti Virus – Free Virus Removal
By Ryan WilksAVG antivirus is one of the highest ranked free virus scan and removal programs available today. Whether you want the free version or want to shell out some money for the retail version, AVG is one of the highest ranked free virus protection software on the market today. However, I still wouldn’t recommend doing anything you want online and throw caution to the wind. As with every anti virus software it can’t protect against stupidity. When compared to the competition, AVG comes out among the top competitors but that isn’t saying too much when you consider the competition. Throughout the article, I will explain the reasons that 8 out of 10 people agree, AVG is one of the most well performing free virus scan and removal programs available and the difference between that and the retail version.
First off, compared to many other anti virus programs, AVG is less resource intensive. What do I mean by resource intensive? I mean that it takes a lot of your computer’s memory to run it. Compared to AVG, McAfee takes five times the amount of hard drive space but takes the same amount of RAM. From personal testing and experience I can tell you that McAfee slowed my computer down way more so than AVG did so this RAM information may be a false advertisement. AVG only requires a Pentium with 300MHz processor so it should run on any computer in existence since most computers today are at least a Pentium 4 with 1.0GHz at the least. When compared with Symantec Norton Antivirus which requires a 300MHz processor, 512MB RAM recommended and 150MB of hard drive space, AVG is clearly the one to choose. In my personal experience, I am unable to even tell a difference in performance when AVG is running even if I am playing Diablo 2 or Age of Empires 3 which both require a good amount of resources. This is another reason AVG is ranked high.
Second, when it comes to detecting viruses, AVG is among the best. Can you believe that AVG has a 93% detection rate? The free version has a little lower and the retail version a little higher but this is the average. Even with the difference, I have had the free version of AVG find numerous things that McAfee and Norton Antivirus missed.
Third and probably most important, ITS FREE! AVG Free is an excellent product and will out perform most antivirus that you would buy in a store. That is why the retail version of AVG is AMAZING. If you know what you are doing with computers and feel pretty safe using one you will be okay using AVG Free with Spybot or some other Spyware remover, however if you are not so comfortable with using a computer and worried about not being safe; I would recommend buying the retail version and keeping it updated. This is just to make sure you are safe. Always remember, its cheaper to pay for an antivirus than to lose all your cash to a hacker!
In the end, no program is going to be perfect and AVG like others has its downfalls. For AVG it’s a number of programs that AVG is not compatible with. If you have these then it’s probably a good idea to try another free virus scan and removal. These programs include: Webroot SpySweeper, ICQ toolbar, Session Manager 0.6.1.13 add-on, the StumbleUpon toolbar, System Protect, Dell Network Assistant, and Contafiscal 2000. Now I don’t think most people are going to have these however I wanted to throw out a warning anyway.
In conclusion, AVG is excellent software that I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a free solution to antivirus. It requires and uses fewer resources than many other antivirus programs, it detects approximately 93% of viruses and other malware, it has a FREE version, and there are only a few programs that it is not compatible with. So, if you are looking for an excellent addition to your computer security collection consider AVG Free. If you arent too good with computers and would like to keep the money currently in your bank account out of the hands of hackers, I would recommend paying for the retail edition.
